RightFax 9.3 FP 1b Frequently Asked Questions

Captaris wishes to address questions that may arise out of the changes made to the RightFax 9.3 Feature Pack 1. A few weeks ago, FP 1 was replaced with FP 1a due to issues discovered that had a potential to slow down the processing of faxes on a RightFax Server. Now, FP 1a has been replaced by FP 1b, because another issue was detected and repaired. As of December 13, 2006, Captaris has now released the first Hot Fix for 9.3 FP1b. This hot fix is a required update to all FP1b systems.

Important: All RightFax 9.3 customers are advised to apply FP 1b, then apply Hot Fix 1.

Q: Why is there now a Feature Pack 1b? Also, why was there a Feature Pack 1a?

A: When technical issues are discovered in the RightFax software, Captaris makes every effort to ensure that the downloadable RightFax feature packs or service packs are free of those issues, such that they do not adversely impact any customer production systems. It is very important to note that not all customer systems are impacted by the defects; in most cases, a unique set of criteria and circumstances must be met in order to experience the problem at all.

Sometimes, the issues are discovered after the feature packs or service packs have been made available from the Captaris Web site. Thus, when a new issue is discovered, it becomes necessary to remedy the situation by first removing the offending feature pack from the Web page to avoid proliferation of the error. Then, we remedy the situation and create a new downloadable feature pack.

Q: I’m at 9.3 (base). Do I need to apply the previous hot fixes before I apply FP 1b?

A: No. You should apply FP 1b to your base 9.3 install. Then, apply Hot Fix 1.

Q: I’m at 9.3 Hot Fix 1. Can I apply Feature Pack 1b?

A: Yes. You should apply FP 1b whether you have HF1, HF2, or HF3. Then, apply Hot Fix 1.

Q: I’m at 9.0 (or 8.7). Will this upgrade me to 9.3?

A: No. This feature pack is for customers currently running RightFax 9.3 (base, HF1, HF2, or HF 3) and is not an upgrade to RightFax 9.3. Customers with current support or maintenance plans wishing to upgrade to RightFax 9.3 should contact their Captaris reseller or Captaris directly at CaptarisUpgrade@Captaris.com.

Q: What is the difference between FP 1, FP 1a, and FP 1b and now the hot fix?

A: FP 1b is the latest feature pack available for download for any RightFax 9.3 system. It is recommended that you apply FP 1b in place of any other version of the feature pack. Issues were discovered in FP 1 and FP 1a that were fixed in FP 1b and Hot Fix 1. A final roll-up of these fixes is in Hot Fix 1 and this fix is required for all FP1b systems.

Q: What are the issues? How do I know if I have those problems?

A: It may be that you do not have these problems at all. A description of the symptoms are listed below:

  • Issue 1: Inbound faxes in RightFax may cease processing under certain circumstances in which a partial fax is received. The DocTransport service reports errors and stops processing image (.IPK) files. No faxes are lost.

  • Issue 2: The RightFax DocTransport service won't recover automatically after losing and restoring connectivity with the SQL Server, causing outbound faxes to fail and inbound faxes to result in a build up of waiting image (.IPK) files. No faxes are lost.

  • Issue 3: When RightFax 9.3 was installed on an international operating system, the Windows group permissions were not being properly set in the operating system. Faxes were not being received by the server.

  • Issue 4: A problem affecting RightFax 9.3 Feature pack 1b Remote Doctransport servers has been discovered that may cause all inbound fax images in the RightFax system to cease processing on the affected Remote Doctransport servers. The fax images remain in the doctransport or rfboard directory as .IPK files. No faxes are lost and this problem is typically discovered before the system is placed into production. The cause of this problem is a missing DLL file.

Note: All four issues are fixed in Feature Pack 1b, Hot Fix 1

Q: If I already downloaded FP 1 or FP 1a and have applied it to my server, what do I need to do to replace this with FP 1b?

A: Obtain and apply a patch from Captaris Global Technical Support.

Q: Why doesn't the BoardServer module start when I have TR1034 fax boards configured in the DocTransport module?'

A: As of FP1b for RightFax 9.3, TR1034 fax boards are configured in the DocTransport module & no longer use the BoardServer module.  It is expected that the BoardServer module will not start unless you are using a TR114 or Intel/Dialogic fax board.
