This document provides late-breaking or other information that supplements the RightFax documentation. Service packs are the means by which RightFax product updates are distributed from the Captaris Web site. A service pack may contain updates for system reliability, program compatibility, performance improvements, and more. All service packs are cumulative. Each contains new fixes plus all the fixes from previous hot fix and service pack releases.

This document describes the current update to this version of the RightFax Remote BoardServer and fax board driver software. It provides installation instructions and a brief description of problems fixed with this release.

By the time you receive this software, updates to other RightFax software may be available. To obtain updates, go to http://www.captaris.com/customer_support.

Identifying Remote BoardServers

This service pack should be installed on computers that are running version 8.5 of the RightFax Remote BoardServer. Follow these steps to confirm that a computer has this version of the Remote BoardServer installed.

  1. From the computer desktop, select Start > Settings > Control Panel. If this computer is a RightFax server, the Control Panel will include an application called RightFax BoardServer. If this application is not present, do not run the update program RightFax 8.50 SP5 RBS Patch.exe on this computer. If any other RightFax applications such as RightFax Server are present in the Control Panel, then this is a RightFax server and not a Remote BoardServer and you should install the service pack for RightFax servers instead.

  2. From the computer desktop, navigate to C:\Program Files\RightFax\RFBoard. Right-click on BoardSrv.exe and select Properties from the shortcut menu. If the Created date is earlier than July 25, 2002, the installed remote BoardServer is not version 8.5 and you must upgrade to version 8.5 before installing this service pack. If the Created date is July 25, 2002 or later, the Remote BoardServer is version 8.5 and you should proceed to install this service pack and the service pack for fax boards drivers.

Installing Service Pack 5 for the RightFax Remote BoardServer

To update your software, Microsoft Windows Installer will patch your existing RightFax installation by replacing existing files with updated files and installing new files.

  1. Log on to the RightFax 8.5 Remote BoardServer as an administrator.

  2. Run the program RightFax 8.50 SP5 RBS Patch.exe that you extracted from the downloaded .zip file.

  3. At the introductory screen, click Update. A status bar will indicate the progress of the installation.

  4. When the installation is complete, click Finish.

  5. After completing the service pack installation for the RightFax Remote BoardServer, you must install the service pack for the fax board drivers (described in the next section).

Installing Service Pack 5 for the Fax Board Drivers

To update your software, Microsoft Windows Installer will patch your existing RightFax installation by replacing existing files with updated files and installing new files.

  1. When the installation of Service Pack 5 for the RightFax Remote BoardServer is complete, remain logged on as an administrator.

  2. Run the program RightFax 8.50 SP5 Hardware Patch.exe located on your update CD or extracted from the downloaded .zip file.

  3. At the introductory screen, click Update. A status bar will indicate the progress of the installation.

  4. When the installation is complete, click Finish.

  5. The installation program includes Brooktrout TR1034 fax board firmware. If you have one of these fax boards installed, you must run a batch file that installs the firmware to the boards. Open a command prompt window. Navigate to the folder RightFax\RFBoard\Boston and run Flashupd.bat. This step gets the firmware from the folder C:\Program Files\RightFax\RFBoard\Boston. To change the path, edit the Flashupd.bat file in any text editor. In the file, change the loader path to the correct path to the folder that contains the firmware. This command only supports short file names, so you may need to truncate folder names, such as "Program Files" to "Progra~1".
