    A VB6 program running on RFCOMAPI.DLL (v9.3.2.553) crashes when handling events

    Hi all,

    I wrote a testing program in VB6 (Ref below for the entire code) to test the compatibilty of a VB6 program on the latest Rightfax patch (V9.3 Feature Pack 2 Service Release 5 -  RFCOMAPI.DLL v9.3.2.553).  It runs alright without handling events (e.g. new fax events), but it crashes in about 15 sec when I turn on the "Event Handling" option.  (NOTE: This program runs perfectly on Rightfax V8.5 SP4 (RFCOMAPI.DLL v8.6.0.106).  Any ideas or input are appreciated, thanks !

    Code here:

    Re: A VB6 program running on RFCOMAPI.DLL (v9.3.2.553) crashes when handling events

    Using your code, I was able to reproduce the problem you encountered when using the RFCOMAPI.DLL v9.3.2.553. I modified the following method to check for a Nothing value of NewFax and that seemed to fix the problem:

    Public Sub MyFaxServerEventHandler_OnNewFaxEvent(ByVal NewFax As RFCOMAPILib.Fax)
        Dim strMsg As String
        Dim currentTime
        If Not (NewFax Is Nothing) Then
            strMsg = TimeStamp & "> " & NewFax.UniqueID & ":  " & NewFax.TotalPages & " pgs  " & whatFaxStatus(NewFax.FaxStatus) & "  "
            strMsg = strMsg & whatErrorCode(NewFax.FaxErrorCode)
            lstEvents.AddItem strMsg
        End If
    End Sub

    Hope that helps!

    Re: A VB6 program running on RFCOMAPI.DLL (v9.3.2.553) crashes when handling events

    Hi Erin,

    Thanks so much for your reply.  I modified the code as yours and the program can handle the new fax events now when running from IDE.  What a big improvement!  However, there are still problems:

    • There are some runtime errors '-2147024809 (80070057)' when I play around the program  (e.g. switch users to show their faxes).  Those errors happen only after the 15-second mark and seem to be not fatal that the IDE can recover them.
    • When I run the program from its exe (not running from IDE), it still crashes in about 15 sec.

    My observation is that the program seems to go into an unstable state after receving the first event, which is at about 15 second mark after connecting to the Rightfax server.  And, I am wondering if there is any precautions or assumptions when programming custom code in V9.3 environment, which seems to behave differently from V8.5.

    Thanks again for your reply.

    Following your instructions, I also observed this same behavior on my system when running your program. I am currently researching it and will post with my findings / suggestions.

    Thanks,

    Erin

    Re: A VB6 program running on RFCOMAPI.DLL (v9.3.2.553) crashes when handling events

    After some additional research, we have determined this is a bug in the RFCOMAPI.DLL (v9.3.2.553). I have entered it into our tracking system (# 66332)  and it will be triaged for inclusion in a future release/patch. If you currently have a technical support contract, you can contact our technical support line for updates on the status of this particular defect.

    Thanks,

    Erin

    Re: A VB6 program running on RFCOMAPI.DLL (v9.3.2.553) crashes when handling events

    Hi Erin,

    Thankyou very much for your information, which is very helpful.  I shall contact the technical support for this.  Secondly, I found some problems with some fax object's methods(e.g. FaxStatus, totalPages, ...), not sure if they are related, when running a VB Script with CScript host on V9.3 platform.

    Appreciate for your reply.

    Code here:

    On Error Resume Next

     Set objRFServer = CreateObject("RFComAPI.FaxServer")
     If Err.number <> 0 Then
       WScript.echo "Could not initialize RightFax API: " & Err.Description
     End If

     objRFServer.UseNTAuthentication = False
     objRFServer.ServerName = "MyRightfaxServer"
     objRFServer.AuthorizationUserID = "administrator"
     objRFServer.AuthorizationUserPassword = ""
     objRFServer.Protocol = 0

     objRFServer.OpenServer
     If Err.number <> 0 Then
       strErrMsg="Could not connect to RightFax server: " & Err.Description
       WScript.echo strErrMsg
     End If

     For Each objFolder In objRFServer.AuthorizationUser.Folders
       If UCase(objFolder.ID) = UCase("Main") Then
       Set objMainFolder = objFolder
       End If
     Next

     Set objFaxes = objMainFolder.Faxes
     For Each objFax in objFaxes
      WScript.echo "Fax:" & objFax.UniqueID

      WScript.echo "  Status:" & objFax.FaxStatus
      If Err.number <> 0 Then
        strErrMsg="  Error calling FaxStatus: " & Err.Description
        WScript.echo strErrMsg
      End If

      WScript.echo "  Page:" & objFax.totalpages
      If Err.number <> 0 Then
        strErrMsg="  Error calling totalpages: " & Err.Description
        WScript.echo strErrMsg
      End If
     Next

     objRFServer.CloseServer

    I have the exact same problem with FaxStatus and TotalPages running a VB Script using the 9.0.3.215 rfcomapi.dll, It works fine with the 8.5 version.

    Thanks

    Thanks

    I have been researching this issue and have determined it is a defect in the API introduced sometime after the 8.7 version of RightFax. In 8.7, when you did objFolder.ID it would return the name of the folder, now it returns an empty string  everytime.

    The defect created to track this issue is 66551. If you have a standard technical support contract, you can contact them for a status update on the issue.

    The following VB.NET Code illustrates the problem - run it again 8.7 version of the API and it will print out hte folder name, run it against the 9.3 version of the api and it will not.

    Imports RFCOMAPILib

    Module Module1

    Sub Main()

    Dim objRFServer As RFCOMAPILib.FaxServer

    Dim objFaxes As RFCOMAPILib.Faxes

    Dim objFax As RFCOMAPILib.Fax

    objRFServer = New FaxServer()

    objRFServer.ServerName = "SupportDev-RightFax"

    objRFServer.Protocol = CommunicationProtocolType.cpNamedPipes

    objRFServer.AuthorizationUserID = "Administrator"

    objRFServer.AuthorizationUserPassword = ""

    objRFServer.UseNTAuthentication = False

    objRFServer.OpenServer()

    objFaxes = objRFServer.AuthorizationUser.Faxes

    For Each objFax In objFaxes

    Console.WriteLine("Fax:" & objFax.UniqueID)

    Console.WriteLine("Folder: " & objFax.Folder.ID)

    Console.WriteLine(" Status:" & objFax.FaxStatus)

    Console.WriteLine(" Page:" & objFax.TotalPages)

    Next

    objRFServer.CloseServer()

    Console.ReadLine()

    End Sub

    End Module

    Re: A VB6 program running on RFCOMAPI.DLL (v9.3.2.553) crashes when handling events

    Just heard the news that Rightfax V9.4 is on the way to release later this year.  I am wondering if there is a still Service Release 7 for Rightfax V9.3 to fix the COMAPI bugs.

    As we are in an urgency to have our custom code to work with Rightfax V9.3, we are now exploring any workarounds while we are waiting for the patch or next release.  So far it looks like that running the custom codes on Rightfax client V8.5 connecting to Rightfax Server V9.3 seems alright, the only thing it looks strange (but not critical) is that there are error messages happening every 15 seconcds from the application log on the Rightfax server shown as below:

    Source: RightFax Database Module

    Description: GNF:Error (2) reading Fax'.

    Appreciate if you can shed some light about the service release and the workaround.  Thankyou.
